The Exercise

This exercise provides an opportunity to practice pronunciation, stress and intonation, as well as, have a discussion about cultural expectations and roles. There is also an opportunity to talk about customs and other expectations when interacting with people.

Preparation

  1. Print out the script, then read it. Look up any words that are new, unfamiliar, or seem awkward in use.
  2. Watch the Youtube video of the actors while reading the script, listening for pronunciation, stress and intonation.
  3. When you feel you are ready, take on the role of each part, trying to deliver the lines of the script without reading.
  4. Repeat Step 3 for each role.

Class

  1. Take turns playing a role interacting with classmates who will also be playing a role. Deliver your lines as if you are the actor in the tv show.
  2. Debrief / Critique each other.
  3. Review and discuss questions related to communication, relationships, customs, and other expectations when interacting with people.

  1. What does “bartering” mean? Do you have bartering in your country? Should bartering be illegal?

  4. What is the best way to lose weight?
  5. How popular are fitness clubs in your first country? How are fitness clubs in Canada different from the country you came from?
  6. What sports and activities are usually offered at a fitness club?
  7. Do employers usually offer fitness memberships as part of their employee benefits program? What is the benefit to the employer to pay for an employees fitness membership?
  8. Is Physical Education mandatory in public school, high school, university in your first country?
  9. Should fitness clubs be segregated by sex (a club exclusively for men and a club exclusively for women). Why or why not?
  10. How much exercise do you do each day? What is your resting heart rate?
